Jailer’s Inn Bed & Breakfast

Iron bars on windows, 30 inch thick stone walls, and heavy steel doors slamming behind you. Does this sound like a typical tourist accommodation? That’s because the Jailer’s Inn is anything but typical. Hence the eccentric and historical theme. Located in the heart of downtown Bardstown, this historic Bed & Breakfast, circa 1819, offers a unique and luxurious way while you “do time.”

There are six guest rooms in this B&B, all of which are beautifully decorated with antiques and heirlooms found in the front renovated section of the jail. The back jail built in 1874 remains for the most part unchanged. That’s so you can get a chilling and sobering look at what conditions were like in the old Nelson County jail. It’s easy to picture the way things used to be, because the jail didn’t close down until 1987. On spring and summer mornings, sip hot coffee and chat with other guests during breakfast in the courtyard. Try to imagine it as its previous uses. Picture it as a work yard where prisoners crushed limestone. Imagine it as a place to visit forlorn relatives. Visualize the beautiful and well kept lawn as the centralized location of the Nelson County gallows. Let the history buff in you come out to play!
